Dermal fillers can be highly effective for achieving smooth, youthful skin. When injected properly, they diminish fine lines and wrinkles, providing a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. However, achieving the desired results requires a combination of healthcare knowledge and training. Unfortunately, not all medi-spas offering dermal fillers can provide this level of professionalism. At MGMA3, we ensure that only qualified professionals administer dermal fillers, given the complexity of facial anatomy, which includes sensitive nerves and blood vessels.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are small hyaluronic gel injections, made of synthetic or natural substances, used to add volume to soft tissue. Injected into the dermis layer of the skin, they can fill in wrinkles, creases, and folds anywhere on your face, including around the eyes, cheeks, mouth, and jawline. They can also plump lips. When injected correctly by an experienced physician, dermal fillers can lift the face and stimulate collagen in various parts of the body.
Different Kinds of Dermal Fillers
There are two main types of dermal fillers, each providing different benefits and suited to various issues:
- Hyaluronic Gel Fillers: These are natural substances found in the skin, capable of holding 1000x their weight in water. They help to plump, maintain shape, and hydrate the skin. 80% of all fillers at MGMA3 are hyaluronic fillers.
- Radiesse: This unique filler contains calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), which helps build collagen in aging skin. When injected superficially under aging skin in a scaffold-like pattern, it provides structural support and acts as a biostimulator, creating new collagen, elastin, and capillaries to rejuvenate skin and underlying tissue. Radiesse is used in many body areas like the hands, chest, knees, elbows, thighs, and buttocks.
How Dermal Fillers Work
From the age of twenty-five onwards, collagen and elastin levels start to decline, causing a loss of volume. Dermal fillers replenish these naturally occurring substances, rejuvenating skin to make it appear firmer, younger, and fresher.
Longevity of Dermal Fillers
The effects of dermal fillers usually last between six to 18 months, depending on your body’s reaction and the type of filler used. To maintain your desired look, it’s advisable to have a top-up treatment every 6 to 9 months.
Dermal Fillers vs. Botox
Dermal fillers are injected below wrinkles to plump and smooth skin for a youthful look, while Botox freezes small muscles to prevent movements that cause wrinkles, like frown lines or crow’s feet. Often, both treatments are needed for optimal results.
Correcting Dermal Fillers
Minor adjustments can be made to provide better balance or improve overall appearance. If you’re unhappy with the result, an enzyme can be injected to help dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers.
The Procedure
As with any needle procedure, patients may experience slight discomfort during injection. Anesthetic cream or lidocaine injections are applied beforehand to create a numbing effect and alleviate discomfort.
Not Suitable for the Following Candidates
Dermal fillers are not suitable for:
- Pregnant women
- People with autoimmune diseases
- Those who are sick or have just had a vaccine (wait at least 2 weeks after illness or vaccination)
An in-depth consultation with a medical practitioner is essential to determine if dermal fillers are right for you. Alternative treatments may sometimes be recommended.
